SENSATIONAL SURVIVAL: SEVERAL HOURS OF CIRCULATORY ARREST!

In Switzerland a woman with severe accidental hypothermia (65 years, core temperature dropped to 20,8 degrees Celsius) survived a cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation of 288 minutes (4 hours 48 minutes), followed by re-warming with heart-lung-machine with excellent cardiovascular and neurologic long-term outcome.

In Germany a man with severe accidental hypothermia (46 years, core temperature dropped to 24,7 degrees Celsius) survived a cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation of 190 minutes (3 hours 10 minutes), followed by re-warming with heart-lung-machine with excellent cardiovascular and neurologic long-term outcome.

In the region of Grenoble, French Alps, a woman experienced profound accidental hypothermia (57 years, core temperature dropped to 16,9 degrees Celsius). A cardiac arrest occurred during a difficult mountain rescue operation. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was continued for 307 minutes until venoarteriell extracorporeal membrane oxygenation could have been established. She survived with a good neurologic recovery.

SURVIVING SEVERE HYPOTHERMIA

People with low body temperature have a much better chance of successful resuscitation than assumed so far. But only if their hypothermic state is sufficiently taken into consideration throughout rescue and medical intervention.
